Yeah, but can it outshoot my Cooper? :D

Thanks Teryx for the tip about the Kodiaks. I'm not looking for match accuracy, just field accuracy and relatively heavy weight. I'll try the Cudas. Part of the fun in getting a new rifle is testing out the best ammo for it. I love to punch holes in paper but I'm not a match competitor. I'm pretty sure all my rifles will outshoot me.

You have a Cooper ?

Yes, I have a Cooper Phoenix in .204 Ruger. It's the only rifle I ever owned that could shoot a ragged hole at 100 yds.

Here's a followup on my accuracy issues.

Pyramyd Air sent me a new rifle in .22 cal. As yet, I've only done some preliminary testing but here's what I found.

This new rifle has much improved accuracy. So far, the Crosman Premier domed 14.3 pellets seem to shoot the best with many 0.5'" groups at 25 yards and no groups over 0.75", much better than the 2.5" groups I was getting with the previous rifle. I got the pellet sampler from Straight Shooters and will work my way through testing as weather and time permits.

I have tried both the Kodiaks and the H&N Barracuda's, but they don't group as well as the Crosman Premiers. I'll continue to experiment and post my results.

Question. All my testing so far has been with the factory settings. Is it likely that tuning the velocity down might result in better accuracy? Anyone had that experience?

I'm planning to keep the factory setting of 2500 psi since I only have the hand pump and getting from 2500 to 3000 is pretty hard pumping. I Iive in a small town in Iowa and the nearest dive shop is a 90 min drive so I don't know how practical SCUBA tanks would be. Nitrogen is available locally, however. I'm going to check that out.

I read on this forum that Crosman was working on a reasonably priced HPA compressor. I'd certainly go for one. Hand pumping a PCP rifle like the Marauder turns bench-rest target shooting into an aerobic sport.

HI Doc, Glad to see your having better luck with the new one. Does velocity effect accuracy? Well in my experiences so far, the short answer is yes. And I had the long version but I just spent an hour typing it only to find out I was somehow logged off. Therefore, they're won't be a long version. But basically I recently had experienced 3" groups at only 10 yds with Beeman Silver Arrows with muzzle velocities in the 950's but after detuning, was one hole'n them at 675. But on the flip side I'm getting very consistent accuracy with the Crosman Premier Heavy's (Ultra Mags) 10.5's at the 800, 900 and 990's. Go figure?? Cheers. Steve

ps. 90 mins is a long way to go for air! Do you have a paintball shop close by? They can usually do SCBA and SCUBA bottles if you provide the right adapter.

Doc,
What SS86 said :D My paintball fill station is over an hour away. Here's the thing though. I have 2 66cf SCBA tanks at 4500psi that I'm cascade filling my rifle with. According to the calculations, I should get 7500 to 8000 shots on a fill  For me that is basically once a year,.........maybe two

Teryx,

Inspired by your advice, today I ordered a 88 cu. ft. carbon-fiber, 4500 psi tank from the Air Hog folks. I found a paintball filling station about an hour away in a city I like to visit now and then anyway. I think I've passed the point of no return on air guns now. Gotta go now and sort some pellets by weight.

Hey Doc, I hope it's not too late, but you should definately check with that paintball shop just to make sure they'll fill it. Most do, but you never know. You may want to put a hold on that tank (if possible) until your 100% sure. It would be a bummer to get a nice SCBA bottle but can't get it filled anywhere. I'd fill it for you but that's gonna be a long ride ;) . Steve

Steve,
I called them today before I ordered the tank. And on the Internet their web site shows them as doing 4500 psi refills.
